Your Intuition Is Not Reactionary: Don't Be Hasty
Mindful Astrology: Final Scorpio Eclipse - Karmic Portal Edition
Eclipses are unstable by nature. Power wattage blips, outages, lightning bolts that momentarily leave your personal energy enraged or zapped. Lunar eclipses, such as the one we have today, happen when the Earth moves between our two major luminaries, The Sun and The Moon - our daylight and our nightlight.
Your intuition is not reactionary. Your nervous system is.
Your intuition can’t connect when your system experiences power surges. If you are out there today during this eclipse, or any day, making life altering decisions based on extreme highs and extreme lows…wait it out boo. Nurture your system first.
There’s a definable difference between taking in the information your nervous system gives you during these power blips, and basing hasty, fear-initiated decisions on them.
Fear is not what your intuition comes from, your intuition comes from deep, abiding, compassionate and connective Love…Generated in the part of your brain that literally blips offline during fear-based reactions.
The nervous system is the body’s communication device with itself. Fear can create a chemical effect that either puts your system in hyperarousal - fight and flight, or hypoarousal - freeze. When situations in life (and I’m talking emotion-based decisions…I’m not talking about being chased by a bear) bring you into one of these extreme arousal states…or keep you in one of these states for an extended period of time, your body is doing you a favor by letting you know that you need to direct your attention to something…it is not telling you to make your most skillful and intuitive decision for yourself at that moment…
When your nervous system puts you into fight, flight, freeze (or fawn, which can happen in either state), there are steps to take to reconnect your intuition. Your prefrontal cortex is where these decisions take place in the brain. It is the most recently developed (and challenging to access) part of the brain in our human evolution. The prefrontal cortex supports empathetic, compassionate, connective responses for longterm wellbeing.
STEP 1: Ground your body
Ground holds electricity. If your emotions have sent a lightning bolt through your system, allow yourself time to ground into the Earth, and let the shockwave move through and fade out. Allow the chemicals to subside and flush through.
Put your feet and your body literally on the Earth.
Lay down.
Rub your feet in the grass.
Put your hands into the soil.
Roll around on the carpet and cover yourself with a weighted blanket.
Build a blanket fort and put on your favorite hoodie.
STEP 2: Connect with the air element
Air provides space. Space provides time. Time provides distance between the emotional reaction itself (the electric power blip) and the present moment - the moment when you are able to apply nurturance.
Do your best to reconnect with belly breathing. Belly breathing allows your parasympathetic nervous system to move the chemicals through and flush out.
Audibly exhale. Make weird noise when you do.
Go for a walk in the wind.
Go for a drive with the windows down.
Sit in front of an open window and look at a houseplant.
Scream.
Scream while walking in the wind, driving with the windows down or out your open window (who cares if your neighbor thinks you’re weird).
All the while practicing resting your awareness with the air itself, how you feel it in your body, how you experience it on your skin…and practicing not engaging with the situation that initiated the emotional reaction. Anytime your brain wants to bring you to the situation, say NOPE, I’m hangin’ out with the air right now, kthxbai.
STEP 3: Wash it out
Water flushes. Water returns osmotic cleansing to the body. Water is representative of the amniotic fluid that is responsible for your life. Return to it.
Drink a nice tall glass of H2O. Drink several more.
Take a bath. Add magnesium to further flush.
Swim in a body of water.
Take a walk in the rain.
Cry.
Stand in the shower and cry.
Cry into your pillow and then wash your face.
STEP 4: Reconnect with illumination
Allow your awareness to return to the situation only after you have replenished your body. Truly notice if you are ready to return. If you feel yourself pulled right back into hyper or hypoarousal, repeat steps 1-3 until you feel the desire to relieve your suffering come back “online.” This process can take hours, days, weeks, months, decades. (Ahem, can confirm the years part in my own experience.)
Invite inquiry to know what the most hurting part of you wants to receive, hear, know.
Ask yourself what boundaries can support your resource nourishment. Boundaries are for keeping us in, not necessarily others out.
Invite yourself to outline what steps you can take towards resourcing yourself in future moments of the same or similar kinds of situations.
Truly take the time to notice what your body feels like when you make these choices instead of a reactionary one the next time a situation is triggering - THAT’S YOUR INTUITION BOO.
Your intuition is the part of you that wants to resource you in Self-Love.
By all means, retreat when you need. Replenish. And choose to not be hasty with your decision making. Actually listen deeply (time & space) to your body when it tells you it needs more rest or Love.
Repeat ad infinitum.
Eclipses can be karmic turning points in our lives. We move through the solar system with our Sun, our Moon, the other Planets not in a stationary ecliptic, but in a spiral. We are all hurtling through space constantly expanding. That means, when we feel situations come back around during eclipse seasons that initiate a power blip to old or familiar wounds, we are passing right by those points on the spiral again - we can choose outward expansion (aka discomfort) or a step back to the familiar (same harmful patterns). The expanding Universe is always conspiring with us, whether it “feels like it” or not, to choose deep, abiding, intuitive Self-Love.
To lean into the discomfort and grow…by resting and choosing to fucking breath.
I am offering donation-based, “Park PopUp” mindfulness meditation sessions every Sunday in May at a different St. Louis park, supporting Mental Health Awareness Month. In these sessions, I guide and coach practice with the principles included in this Mindful Astrology moment…join if you would like some support to move through your stuck points towards replenishing Self-Love.
With my Love,
